ANIMAL CONSERVATION听-听MY ESCAPE TO ALASKA听
John McCarthy discusses how animals are increasingly becoming the reason for travel not only because of our fascination with the natural world, but also because of the growing conservation movement.
Dr Lee Durrell, widow of the renowned animal conservationist Gerald Durrell, talks about her work and travels to ensure the continuation of her late husband's wildlife conservation projects; Nicole Yde-Poulsen, Expedition Coordinator at EarthWatch explains the link between the scientific research which forms the backbone of the institute and the experience of travel through their volunteer programme.
Guy Grieve, author of Call of the Wild - My Escape to Alaska recounts his adventures after surviving for a year in the Alaskan wilderness, armed with only the most basic equipment.听

This week's guests:
, Honorary Director of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and widow of Animal conservationist Gerald Durrell who took up writing in the fifties after spending his last pennies on expeditions collecting animals around the world.听
He went on to found the north of St Helier in Jersey nearly 50 years ago, with a mission to save endangered species across the globe, from black lion tamarins to lowland gorillas, and endearing meerkats to beguiling orang-utans.听 Across the 31-acre park, conservationists offer free talks about their work, explaining how they look after the different mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, and how this helps conservation projects around the globe.
After Gerald Durrell's death 11 years ago, his widow, Dr Lee Durrell assumed the mantle of Honorary Director and remains instrumental in the work of Durrell Wildlife.听 In 1999 she qualified as light aircraft pilot and now helps to fly animals in and out of the island as part of their breeding schemes. She continues to be actively involved with specific projects, for example in Madagascar she is known affectionately as Mother Tortoise for her work with the endangered ploughshare tortoise.听
This year also marks the 50 th anniversary Gerald Durrell's book My Family And Other Animals.
