MOJ OF THE ANTARCTIC
John McCarthy
is joined by Mojisola Adebayo, theatre performer, writer and director who is currently performing in a play based partly on the biography of Ellen Craft, a 19th century African-American slave woman who escaped to freedom by disguising herself as a white man.

Moj’s character finds work as a sailor on a whaling ship bound for the Southern Seas. Eventually the ship arrives in Antarctic waters for the gruesome task of whaling, and Moj becomes the first Black woman to step foot Antarctica.

The Mughals called Kashmir ‘Paradise on Earth’.Ìý Jammu and Kashmir, which incorporates Ladakh is the northern-most state of India, lying mostly in the Himalayan mountains.Ìý The region is a disputed territory and currently controlled by India, Pakistan and China. It shares a border with Himachal Pradesh to the south, Pakistan to the west and People's Republic of China to the north and the east.

Navnita Chadha Behera, Professor of Peace and Conflict Resolution at Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi is the author of State, Identity and Violence: Jamma, Kashmir and Ladakh.Ìý

Professor Chadha Behera talks about her new book Demystifying Kashmir in which she argues that only by recognizing the multifaceted nature of the place rather than seeing it as a political battle of state-making between India and Pakistan can the long standing problems begin to be resolved.

This week's guests:Ìý

Mojisola Adebayo is a freelance theatre performer, writer, director and workshop leader.
Moj of the Antarctic is an original idea, which draws its inspiration from a variety of historical sources including: Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom, the true life story ofÌý and A Negro Explorer at the North Pole, the autobiography of Matthew Henson. Having decided to include the fictional journey to Antarctica Moj decided to make the trip there herself, partly to experience it and partly to get the photographs she needed for the stage production. She went dressed as a 19th century man as Ellen had done.Ìý
