PILGRIMAGES
In the middle ages people rarely journeyed far from their home; only those like courtiers, traders or soldiers and sailors would venture abroad leaving the average citizen’s horizons pretty limited.Ìý However there was a way to see the wider world - if you were prepared to go on a pilgrimage.Ìý This could be within the British Isles to somewhere like Canterbury or Walsingham or could involve a much greater undertaking to Jerusalem or Rome.Ìý John McCarthy hears how these journeys were made, who made them and about the dangers and problems they faced as they sought atonement.
HAPPINESS
John also meets a couple who, having won a round the world ticket in a competition, decided to find out what defined people’s idea of happiness in the various countries they visited.Ìý Would it differ from culture to culture or is there a universal concept of what makes us happy?

Maren Kleinert and Jan Enkelmann are German and now live in London. Jan is a design director and freelance photographer and Maren works as a brand consultant for a government department.Ìý They won two round the world air tickets in a competition and decided to take a break from their lives.Ìý The route they chose was New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Hong Kong, South East Asia, and India.Ìý They decided rather than just visit places, they would have a project to find out what the world thought was the essence of happiness and whether the ideal varied from place to place. They went round the globe in 56 days and combined their interviewees’ thoughts with some splendid travel photographs of the people and places they visited.
