LANDS AND LANGUAGE
Celts are often thought of as the race that inhabited post Roman Britain but were forced out to the western edges of the continent by the arrival of the Germanic tribes.Ìý Another interpretation is that the race colonised a world which stretched from North Africa to Iceland where the sea was not a barrier but a highway for trade and communication.Ìý How much of this Celtic world has survived and what do the modern Celtic nations now share in terms of culture and language?
Sandi Toksvig is joined by two Celts who travelled in search of an essentially Celtic experience; artist John Rogers captured the landscapes of the Atlantic seaboard on his canvas and writer and television presenter Manchan Magan journeyed round Ireland speaking only Irish Gaelic.

Keele University’s Academic Registrar, Helena Thorley regularly visits the Far East to recruit students from different cultures and to find out their expectations while answering their questions about life in Britain.

Manchán lives in Ireland.Ìý He speaks Irish Gaelic which he learnt from his grandmother.Ìý Manchán began to wonder why it wasn’t comfortable to speak it in Dublin and he’d made a documentary series No Béarla about what would happen when he travelled Ireland speaking only Irish.Ìý The new series No Béarla 2 ‘Seeking Irish’ is a humorous exploration of the Irish language and is broadcast on the Irish language television station TG4 in Ireland.

Helena Thorley is an Academic Registrar of .Ìý Helena is responsible for student marketing, admission exams and promoting the university.Ìý As part of her job, she travels abroad to recruit students to study at the University, she specialises in China and south East Asia, particularly Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Brunei and Thailand.
