AMERICAN TRAVEL
´óÏó´«Ã½â€™s former Washington correspondent Matt Frei talks about his new book Only in America, a collection of his thoughts and personal experiences of the time he has spent in the States and examines the American attitude to tourism and travel.

VEGETARIAN
Vegetarians and vegans can find their diet put to the test in some countries outside the UK where the concept of not eating meat is less well established or non existent.Ìý While restaurants, in a carnivorous culture, might not always be as helpful as they could, being invited into people’s homes can turn out to be even trickier.

John McCarthy meets two travellers who have managed to stick to their principles; Alex Bourke is a vegan and a writer of guides on how to avoid eating meat around the world, and Lyn Hughes is a vegetarian and the Editor in Chief of Wanderlust magazine.

Lyn Hughes is the Editor in Chief of magazine.Ìý She has been a vegetarian since the age of eighteen when she first left home.Ìý Lyn travels a lot in connection with her job but also as a holiday maker and an independent traveller.Ìý Lyn recommends doing research about the cuisine of a country before going, the internet is useful source of information and to take a bottle of sauce to spice up the bland food you might encounter.

Alex Bourke went to work in Paris the early nineties, he was already a vegetarian. Unable to source any peanut butter in Paris, he started compiling a ‘guide’ on vegetarian shops, restaurants etc. From his experiences spanning several continents Alex realised that vegetarians needed more information when travelling. His first guide was about London followed by the first European veggie guide.
