FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH – ROSIE SWALE POPE

Sandi Toksvig
hears of two extraordinary global journeys.Ìý

William Lewis and Christine Godfrey, a couple from Surrey are the first people to have driven to the four corners of the earth. Starting, from Dorking they went to the top of Norway, east to Newfoundland via Alaska, south to Cape Horn, across to Australia and the Cape of Good Hope in Africa and then back to Europe and the UK via the Middle East - fourteen months of driving just about every day.Ìý

Rosie Swale Pope ran around the world across Europe, Asia and North America. On Monday 25th August 2008 she completed 20,000 miles journey having got through 45 pairs of shoes, enduring frostbite, double pneumonia and several cracked ribs.

Ìý
A few years ago William’s friend in Australia suggested a trip to the four corners of the earth, from Europe to the north of Russia across Asia and the Pacific to the north of North America. From there to Cape Horn across to Australia and then South Africa, up through Africa, the Middle East and back across Europe to the UK.

When William’s male friends couldn’t go Christine was asked to join and they spent about four months planning the journey.Ìý They bought a right hand drive 4x4 second hand, an international brand that could be serviced and parts found for in most places of the world. ÌýWilliam drove and Christine was in charge of the navigation and also took care of the admin as they went along; kept a diary for a future book and filmed the trip for a documentary.Ìý William and Christine were self funded and their aim was to raise money forÌý a charity in 49 developing countries.Ìý On the way William visited a child in Guatemala he had adopted through PLAN.Ìý They set off in May 2007 and finished fourteen months later having covered 55,842 miles, visitedÌýforty eightÌýcountries and driven for 1500 hours.Ìý

Ìýmay be the oldest person to have run round the world, crossing Europe, Asia and North America; as well as a bit of Greenland and from Scotland to her home in Tenby in South Wales. Rosie began on 2 October 2003 and finished more than 20,000 miles later last Monday 25th Aug 2008.

Rosie is no stranger to adventures, in the seventies she had sailed around the world from England via Australia with her first husband and daughter on a 30-foot catamaran.Ìý Their second child was born on board, and in 1983, she sailed solo across the Atlantic and later trekked 2,000Ìýmiles through Chile on horseback.Ìý When her second husband Clive died of prostate cancer and Rosie vowed to raise awareness of the cancer with her epic run.
