Sandi Toksvig is joined by Tony Wheeler Co founder of Lonely Planet travel guides and Jennifer Cox, travel journalist and writer, to discuss how the modern guidebook has changed the way we travel. IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF
Hazel Staten鈥檚 life threatening illness inspired her to set off on an exceptional journey. She travelled from London across Europe to Yangcheng, a remote city in Shanxi Province, following in the footsteps of the early 20th century missionary Gladys Aylward, whose life story was made into the film Inn of the Sixth Happiness.

is co-founder of the Lonely Planet travel guides.听 He did his first trip with his wife Maureen, travelling across Europe, then in 1972 set off for a year long trip 鈥渢o get the travel bug out their system鈥.听 They followed the hippy trail from England through Asia to Australia and saw the need for a new kind of travel guide.

Hazel Staten recently set off from Liverpool Street Station in London and travelled by rail across Europe to Beijing; where she then flew to Yangcheng, a remote city in Shanxi Province.
Hazel wanted to retrace the steps of the incredible English parlourmaid Gladys Aylward who became a missionary in China in the nineteen thirties.听 Her story was immortalised in the 1960's Hollywood movie called The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, starring Ingrid Bergman.听 Gladys left Yangcheng, where she was based, travelling across the mountains to lead 100 orphans to safety through the war torn countryside.
