John McCarthy meets the winners of this year’s Wanderlust magazine third Paul Morrison Guide Awards. It celebrates the unsung heroes of travel and recognises their unique contribution to tourism and work within their local communities.

ENGLISH MEDIEVAL CATHEDRALS The architectural historian Jon Cannon talks about the joys of visiting the great English cathedrals.Ìý He shares his passion and insight into the history and the people associated with these somewhat overlooked buildings.
Esam Abd El Salam won the Gold travel guide Award. He’s from Egypt, a country with some of the most highly regarded and experienced guides in the world. Esam started as a guide a couple of year’s ago with , a company which now only uses local leaders in Egypt. Esam likes to make the trip special and even invited group to a friend’s house for dinner.
Daniel Evans won the Silver travel guide Award. He mainly leads in Italy. Dan took a degree in the History of Art and Architecture and for the past seven years has tutored students and their parents on cultural tours of Italy.Ìý
Sameer Singh Rathore won the Bronze travel guide Award.Ìý Sameer is a member of the Rajput royal family.Ìý Although a talented athlete, he was forced to abandon his ambition to become a member of the India national team following a back injury.Ìý Sameer started work as a tour guide in 2004 making sure that the local people with little means also benefit from tourism.

The Paul Morrison Guides Award 2008
Wanderlust magazine launched the Paul Morrison Award in 2006 to recognise the unsung heroes of the travel world - tour guides. Paul Morrison who died in December 2004 was the co-founder and former publisher of the magazine.
Jon Cannon is a writer and historian. Jon travelled the length and breadth of England and much further afield to research his new book about English Cathedrals.Ìý His aim was to reveal the human beings and explain the motivation that created these extraordinary structures.Ìý Jon often slept in a tent and walked or cycled to the building itself, giving a real sense of the experience of these buildings as they might have struck a medieval viewer.
