OLD MAN ON A BIKE 鈥 THE SNOW TOURIST
Sandi Toksvig meets Simon Gandolfi, who at the age of seventy three rode the length of South America on a motorbike. She also talks to Charlie English, Associate Editor at The Guardian, who鈥檚 fascination for snow transformed him into an enthusiastic 鈥榮now tourist鈥.

(now 75) was seventy three when he undertook a motorbike trip on a Honda 125 from Veracruz in Mexico to Tierra del Fuego in Argentina. Simon had suffered two heart attacks and also wished to discover for himself whether the people of South America fitted the stereotypes assigned to them as well as find out what they thought of the British. He first took a flight to the US then a bus down to Mexico where he purchased a small but rugged motorbike.
Simon then crisscrossed听 visiting Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. In his book Old Man on a Bike, Simon recounts the joys of travelling with an open heart and mind and recounts the adventures he had and remembers the people he met.
