Ìý-Ìý John Hare is a writer, adventurer, fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and founder of the Wild Camel Protection Foundation.Ìý John’s latest book tells the story of his search for the wild, nearly extinct, Bactrian camel and his travel to some uncharted parts of the vast and mysterious Chinese Gobi Desert.
TRAVEL POETRY
Sandi Toksvig is joined by travel writer Christopher Somerville who has compiled an anthology of his poetry entitled Greenwood Dark- A Traveller’s Poems and novelist, biographer and literary editor A.N. Wilson who recently edited a collection of English ‘poetry of place’ called England.
They discuss the power of poetry as a way of describing, mapping and evoking people, places and journeys and celebrate the poem as a means to reflect on and explore the travelling life.

is a desert adventurer and conservationist; his search for the wild Bactrian camels has seen him trek in some of the most remote and inhospitable parts of the Gobi desert. John managed to obtain permission to enter an area of China, which had been prohibited, to foreigners for over fifty years. During his travel became involved with the protection of the wild Bactrian Camel, the only wild camels in the Mongolian and Chinese quarters of the Gobi desert. In 2004 John Hare was awarded the Ness Award by the Royal Geographical Society for raising awareness about wild Bactrian camels
John’s latest book is called Mysteries of the Gobi Desert: Searching for wild camels and lost cities in the heart of Asia.
