4 WHEELS TOÌýÌý
ANDÌý
Sandi Toksvig hits the road in two unsuitable vehicles; To discuss bumpy roads and adventures, she is joined by Manchán Magan who undertook a road trip from London to Kenya, 16,000 kilometres or six months in a 1960’s ex British army Bedford truck filled with ‘a group of squabbling, cast-offs’; and Dan Murdoch who decided, with some friends, to travel from Germany to Cambodia using a Trabant, which some say is one of the worst cars ever built.

is a travel writer and television presenter. Manchán recently published his book entitled Truck Fever: A Journey Through Africa which tells the story of a trip he undertook as a very young man in the early 90’s. He met up with complete strangers at Ramsgate in order to travel by Bedford Truck to Kenya, camping most of the way.

Manchán talks about their route across France, Spain, the Straights of Gibraltar then Africa. Checkpoints, armed soldiers, bribery, lost passports, money and medicine were all part of the adventure as well as being abandoned by the Congo River in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). All this at the end of Mobutu's reign when the country was bankrupt, which meant no diesel, no food, no transport and an army that hadn't been paid for months and was in a state of mutiny…

decided, with some friends, to travel from Germany to Cambodia using a Trabant, or Trabby to its fans. This small plastic iconic symbol of the Soviet Union although a polluting and unsafe mode of transport did not deter Dan and his fellow explorers. They set off with three Trabants and a support car from the original Trabant Factory to Europe to Turkey, over Caspian Sea to Central Asia, across the Pamir Mountains, Siberia, the Gobi desert, China, Lao and south to Cambodia.

Dan wrote a book about his experiences The Trabant Trek, crossing the World in a Plastic Car.
