Libby Purves presents this week's edition of the Learning Curve

Scottish Nurseries and Nursery Teachers
Glasgow City Council has decided to remove all nursery teachers from its 37 "stand alone" state nursery schools (ages 3-5). However, nurseries attached to primary schools will keep their teachers. The Educational Institute of Scotland (largest teaching union in Scotland ) opposed the decision. What implications does this have for pre-school education in Scotland ?

Libby is joined from Glasgow by Aileen Scullion, Chair of the Glasgow EIS and Headteacher of one of the affected nurseries and Pauline Trudell from the Forum for Maintained Nurseries and Children's Centres. She also has a few words with Julie Greer, Independent Chair of Sure Start Central Management in Southampton about their new building being put up in Clovelly Road .

Campaign for a new Secondary School in Holborn and St Pancreas.
A group of parents have joined to petition Camden Council for a new secondary school as they are all out of the catchment area for Camden 's secondary schools. Emma Jones outlines their case.

Russell Group (top research universities) & RAE
University funding depends partly on the RAE - or research assessment exercise - a fairly Byzantine system for giving marks and funding according to the research that universities produce, as against just teaching the next generation. It's very competitive between institutions, as is illustrated by an extraordinary business in which Sheffield Hallam University poached an entire department, Sports Science, from Sheffield University . It was also the department which had worked with Kristan Bromley, PhD in materials engineering, also known as Dr Ice, who finished fifth in the Winter Olympics in Turin
