Arthur's Diary - in the Pas de Calais
Montreuil sur Mer |
Day One
It always seems a bit rude to arriving French people that the London Terminal of Eurostar is named after a battle in which they were beaten. Perhaps to take the edge off this the caf茅 opposite Eurostar on the concourse of Waterloo station is called Caf茅 Napeleon. Sara Jane (my producer) and I prepare our trip with a grand creme and a croissant.
We detrain at Lille and hire-car it to Montreuil-Sur Mer, which 500 years ago was indeed "sur mer" but is now 13 kilometres inland. The menu in the Haut de Montreuil restaurant boasts a double whammy with frogs legs and snails in the same dish. I have bisque en croute (honestly) pigs trotter and a gooey chocolate thing. I drink water. Sara Jane has 3 glasses of wine and confuses the waiter with her execrable French.
