Leslie Garis is a writer and journalist. Her grandparents were Howard and Lillian Garis, who, from the turn of the century until the 1950s, wrote popular books for children. In her memoir House of Happy Endings she tells of her life growing up in the family house, which tried to mirror the perfect world of her grandparents’ stories. BOB SHEPHERD
Bob Shepherd served in the SAS for twenty years and is now an International Security Advisor. In his book, The Circuit he tells how after September 11th, the demand for security advisors increased overnight and he found himself navigating through landmines in the deserts of Afghanistan, providing security for TV crews, and meeting Warlords and the Taliban. Seamus Murphy is an award winning photographer who has worked in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Iran, Iraq and Uganda during the Ebola outbreak. He has a new photographic display at the , Fathers, Brothers, Sons which features the story of one family in Afghanistan over a decade of conflict. Fathers, Brothers, Sons is at the Imperial War Museum North - 15th March until 6th July 2008.Ìý He is giving at talk there on Friday 18th April at 6pm.Ìý His book A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan is published by SAQI.
