Elinor Goodman goes in search of the winners of the country's first green village competition.
What makes a village green? It is not the patch of grass by the duck pond but it could be the local food on sale in the pub or the shop; the enthusiasm of schoolchildren for recycling and nature studies: or the bottle bank down the track to the allotments. For this week’s Open Country, Elinor Goodman travels some of the by-ways of Essex in search of the county’s most environmentally-friendly village. The three settlements she visits are all finalists in the first Green Village competition – the modern day equivalent of the best-kept village. And yes, she does find men in beards and sandals!
