Helen Mark goes on the road with Herefordshire's Mobile Library Service
The mobile library van, like so many rural services, is under threat. Internet delivery services, the popularity of gaming, increases in fuel costs听and the decline in the popularity of reading itself have meant that the听service is under听pressure to prove its necessity. Could we see a future where the van full of听reading matter is no longer needed, who uses the service now and will they still be borrowing books in years to come?
In Herefordshire the library van has a long history stretching back to it's earliest incarnation as a bread van. The two mobile libraries cover the length and breadth of the county,听serving some of the most remote听spots听 from the Malvern Hills to the Black Mountains. Here the van remains a lifeline for rural communities and even a meeting spot on wheels.
