Bryher Isles of Scilly Richard Pearce
The series starts with Clare visiting Bryher one of the smallest inhabited islands on the Isles of Scilly.
In the first of a new series of Ramblings which takes Clare Balding to the extremes of the UK, she embarks on a gentle stroll around the island of Bryher, home to the smallest community on the Isles of Scilly. Fewer than a hundred people live on the island which is just a mile long and half a mile wide, including Clare’s guests Richard Pearce, the resident artist who was born on nearby St Mary’s and his wife Caroline, the island’s seamstress. As they walk round they describe island living as it is today and tell tales of by-gone days when shipwrecks played an important part in the islanders’ livelihoods (debris washed up is still seen as treasure!) and all the time enjoy the spectacular scenery and constant cries of birds.
