Clare Balding explores favourite British walks
Clare Balding
Clare BaldingIn this programme of Ramblings, Clare Balding听walks for spiritual renewal.
3 October 2008
Clare Balding
Clare Balding walks the North Devon Coast with peace campaigner, Satish Kumar.
Clare walks the with Satish Kumar, who recalls his 8000-mile walk from India to America in the 60s to protest about nuclear arms.
Satish was born in Rajasthan, India, in 1936. He left home at the age 9 to become a jain monk. He lived as听a jain monk until the age of 18.

Then in 1961 he heard that ninety-year-old philosopher and peace campaigner Bertrand Russell had been arrested for his anti-nuclear activities and sentenced to a week in prison. Kumar saw it as a call to action. Together with his friend Prabhakar Menon, Satish walked to the four nuclear capitals - Moscow, Paris, London and Washington. Their journey began at the grave of Mahatma Gandhi and ended, two and a half years later at the grave of John F Kennedy.

The philosophy of jain spirituality is never to rely on transport but to walk everywhere, and here Satish takes Clare on one of his most favourite walks along the rugged coastline in North Devon.

The walk starts at Hartland Point and finishes at Clovelly
