Socialist Sunday Schools
Making History listener Lynne Chalmers contacted the programme to ask about the Socialist Sunday Schools that her grandmother attended in Scotland. In particular, Lynne remembers her describing a lovely 'naming ceremony' for a baby that involved all the children in the Sunday School.
Making History consulted Neil Rafeek at the Scottish Oral History Centre at the University of Strathclyde, who is about to publish a book on the movement, and Fred Reed a retired lecturer in Warwickshire.

The Thankful Villages
Colin Bristow came across the term 'Thankful Villages' and wanted Making History to confirm the origins of this phrase.
The programme consulted Tom Morgan and Norman Thorpe who have researched this topic for a website. Tom confirmed that 'Thankful Villages' was a term coined by the writer Arthur Mee to describe those places that didn't lose any men during the First World War. There is still some debate about the exact number of villages but detailed information can be found on Tom and Norman's website.
Charles Miller the father of Brazilian football?
Dominique Holt asked whether or not it was true that her ancestor, Charles Wicksteed Armstrong, was responsible for taking football to Brazil?
Making History consulted the football historian and writer Dr Rogan Taylor at the Football Research Unit at the University of Liverpool. Dr Taylor explained that the story goes that a Charles Miller, whose father worked in Brazil, was sent to school in Southampton where he picked up the new game of association football and that it was he who took the game back to South America.
