Storage problems in our museums
Making History visited Saffron Walden Museum in North Essex to find out more about some of the artefacts held there and the problems the museum has in storing everything.
The museum has been open for some 170 years, but archaeological digs at Stansted Airport and before the building of the M11 in the late 20th century meant that it received many more artefacts than it was ever designed for.听
Making History also consulted Hedley Swain, Head of the Early Department at the Museum of London.

Why is Northumbria not in the Domesday Book?
Making History consulted of the University of Manchester.
Professor Higham explained that there is no definitive view on this. Some academics think that Northumbria was not regarded as strictly part of the kingdom and so was excluded. Or maybe the 'harrying of the North' by the Conqueror in the winter of 1069/70 had destroyed so much of northern England that even 16 years later it was not worth the cost of the survey. Another thought is that the Domesday Book was compiled in response to the threat from the Danes, which was much more real in south-east England and up the east coast as far as Yorkshire.
For those looking for early records from Northumbria, the best source is the 12th-century 'Boldon Book' produced for the Bishop of Durham in 1183.
