Lloyd George Out, Baldwin In
In 1922 Lloyd George was forced to resign over the crisis in Turkey. He had hoped for a victory with which to win the inevitable general election. In fact the Turkish situation was ended peacefully by negotiation. Turkey regained the Ottoman Empire and was united under Kamal Ataturk.
The Conservatives were in favour of dissolving the coalition government and standing alone at the forthcoming general election. They were right. The Conservatives won the election and Bonar Law became Prime Minister. Unfortunately he was very ill and in 1923 he had to resign and Stanley Baldwin replaced him.
Meanwhile the Labour Party had become strong enough to be recognized as the official Opposition.
