While travelling in the romantic setting of Guadeloupe, Caroline Dempster fell in love. But the object of her affection cost her dear...
The day Caroline first saw Honey |
When Caroline went to visit friends on the island of Guadeloupe in the West Indies, she never imagined that her life would change forever. On the first day of her holiday, she fell in love...with a dog.
One of her friends she was visiting suggested they go and feed a little dog that had been abandoned. Caroline was told "whatever happens, don't look it in the eye or it'll follow you home". But for Caroline, it was love at first sight.
Caroline certainly didn't go to Guadeloupe looking for a dog. In fact, Caroline knew there were enough stray dogs at home in need of a good home. But within 15 seconds, she'd christened the dog Honey and decided to bring it back to the UK with her.
The day Caroline first saw Honey |
Caroline has always been very fond of animals, but would probably describe herself as a cat person. She says, perhaps it was Honey's vulnerability that attracted her.
But there were huge problems getting a stray dog from Guadeloupe to the UK. Caroline didn't know where to start and it took the whole of the rest of her holiday to arrange it. She had to borrow money from a friend to pay the huge vets' bills, but Caroline says that Honey "is worth every penny".
Caroline says that Honey has such a happy personality she's hoping to put her to work with Pets As Therapy, visiting the sick in hospitals and residential homes just cheering people up.
