John Sutton contacted Home Truths about the scrapes he and his friend got into whilst travelling Britain's train network as children.
John in his travelling days |
John Sutton's uncle Arthur worked on the railway and managed to get John and his friend a runabout ticket for the summer holiday. John can't remember the friend now, but he does remember that the Deltic Diesels used to pass through Carnforth (where he lived) at 2pm every day.
John now |
The runabout ticket was valid from Lancaster to Carlisle. They got on a train at Carnforth without taking any notice as to where it was going. It ended up in Carlisle about 100 miles away where John and his friend found themselves stranded.
A kindly station master took them under his wing. He gave them some food and a bed for the night and the next day he took them back to the station and sent them on their way.
