Leaving Mum

Listen again in full

Joan Nash has Multiple Sclerosis. When her husband Peter was offered a job of a life time in Japan, it looked like he'd have to turn it down. But Joan said he should go - and take their two young sons with him.

Joan with the boys Paul and James as toddlers

When Peter was offered a job in Japan, Joan was going to go too. But Joan's Multiple Sclerosis grew worse and she was too ill to travel. Peter's first reaction was, "Well, if we can't all go, then I won't go". But this would leave the Nashs materially worse off.

But if Peter went on his own, Joan would not be able to look after their two lively sons, aged nine and ten. So it was decided that Peter would take the children with him.

The Nash boys on a shopping trip in Tokyo

Peter and the boys moved to Japan 6 weeks ago where he's now living as a single parent. There were initial difficulties. The boys took a while to settle down and now attend the British School in Tokyo. The children will be able to come back to Britain during all of the school holidays. And, if Joan feels well enough, she could come out to Japan鈥ut travelling exhausts her.
