Rick Byrne is a Catholic raised in Dublin and Stacy Schafer is a Jew from San Francisco. It was love at first sight, but before committing to each other long term, their religious differences had to be sorted out…

Stacy and Rick

Rick and Stacy met when Rick went on a "guy's trip" to San Francisco in November 2001. He ended up staying with Stacy for an extra four days while the rest of the guys went home.

The couple said their big goodbyes at the airport, thinking they'd never see each other again. But he invited her to stay for Christmas where she met Rick's family. It was at this point that Stacy decided she wanted to move here to be closer to Rick.

They both wanted their relationship to go somewhere so, as Rick says, "We had to cover the big questions quite fast".

For Stacy, the most difficult issue was the question of the raising of children. She wanted her kids to be brought up in the Jewish faith. This wasn't too much of a problem for Rick who saw a good deal of overlap between their two religions. He says, "I wanted to raise children who would have values". But he's told Stacy to assume he won't convert to Judaism.

Stacy's family liked Rick straight away, but never imagined she'd marry someone who wasn't Jewish. Rick wants his children to have an awareness of Christianity, although he's quite enthusiastic about his Jewish wedding. He's even insisting on resurrecting all sorts of Jewish traditions that Stacy and her family had never heard of before.
