Adoption is at the heart of the Catterall family
Audrey and Gary Catterall are a patient, dedicated couple. They have five children - their own son, Gary and four adopted children - two with special needs.
They adopted their first child, Martin, when he was 2 years old. Audrey was working in the respite home and had noticed that Martin was in a bad way. His injury, recorded as a 'non-accidental' injury, had left Martin with a fractured skull. He would need a lot of care and attention.
Gary knew how demanding it was to care for a person with special needs. His sister, Venetia, who lives with them has Down's Syndrome. But when Gary met Martin, all doubts dissolved.
It didn't stop there. Next came Christopher, an unsettled and aggressive 4-year-old. He'd had 6 homes in his short life, and unsurprisingly, didn't trust anyone.
Martin's brother and sister, Matthew and Natalie, now enter the scene. When Martin was injured, they had gone to live with their Grandmother. They were at at Martin's birthday party at the Catterall's when their grandmother died, and as Audrey says, 'they never went home!'
