Tyke Hike

Josie Barnard has discovered the art keeping a child happy on a long long walk...

Walking is not just walking for Josie Barnard, her husband and their two children, aged 7 and 3. Walking is time to see the world, talk to the kids, discuss cloud formations (elephant or spaceship?), admire flowers, even party a little (when friends come along) Above all it is blessed rest.

Having the temerity to hike with a small child was born out of desperation. As new parents, the pair had to find a way of keeping awake from 10am (five hours after getting up) until the new baby's bedtime. With a home-made baby carrier fashioned from an old rucksack, a 10 mile walk along the Cornish coast turned into a rest cure for the knackered parents.

As the children grew older, strategies and ruses were developed to keep their interest from straying from the footpath. Sweets are not the answer. "Essentially," says Josie, "the secret is to slip in to their rhythm and into a world where time has no limits."
