East End to Africa

Before taking up his post as a music聽teacher an East London secondary modern in the early 70s, Tony Stevens was a聽youth volunteer worker, building roads in the Siskei Homeland in Southern Africa.
In 1977 he took a group of teenagers from聽Daneford聽and Haggerston secondary schools in London聽to Botswana and Lesoto to spend聽8 weeks聽with their African counterparts. The scheme was so successful that聽he's continued to run it annually for more than 30 years.
Tony,聽and one of his pupils from that first-ever trip, Andy Ranson,聽talk about聽their time in Africa.
