Car Wars

Simon Higgs, and his wife Jane have two cars - hers is sleek, clean, and perfumed - his is a dump...

Simon Higgs and his wife Jane have a busy job each and four children between them. They each have a car too. "Daddy's car is very messy," says Simon's 9 year old daughter in a vast understatement. As Simon show Ian Peacock round the interior of his car, they find cassettes, work papers, tobacco wrappers, crisp packets and a grand total of 22 drinks cans. "I look upon my car as a batchelor pad," says Simon. "I'm forced into tidiness in the house... I enjoy the squalor of the interior, and I play my music loud. I lose years when I'm sitting in the car." Ian continues to rake around, unearthing yet more debris; a polo mint packet, more cassettes, letters, chocolate bar covers, a chocolate bar cover covered in chocolate, empty cigarette packets, and melted chocolate inside a chocolate cover. Unashamed, Simon eagerly inspects the melted chocolate, "I wonder if it's still edible..."

Bethany comments, "We don't really refuse to go in Daddy's car, but we do prefer to go in Mummy's car." Jane's car, soft music playing in the background, couldn't be more different. "This is the most pristine show car I've ever seen," says an astounded Ian. "I have my cloths and things for wiping it," explains Jane. The neatness is almost palpable. "And I've got my air fresheners," she adds, "The house work is hard going with the children. This is a smaller area that's easier to keep under control - it's separate from the house - It's my car.
