Dark Angel, was a child of the seventies, he was born in the Yemen and came to Britain when he was a teenager - he has lived on the streets in both places. He has had a difficult life escaping from the past but now he has made a committment to himself to fight for his dreams. He tells his story....
"I was lying on the floor one night when I remember hearing footsteps and voices, I knew my parents were leaving, I watched as their feet went by and knew they wouldn't be coming back." That was my first memory of being left behind in the Yemen, I was five years old.".
"The name "Dark Angel" came about as I used to sleep all day and stay up all night hoping my parents would return but at the same time being too scared to ask if they were coming back. Living with my grandma was hell, and I became very disruptiive and angry so after a couple of years I left and lived on the streets of Yemen living off food tourists had left, then I made some drums out of old oil tins and started singing."
At 13 years old I came to England, "I had forgotten everything about my parents and saw them as two strangers looking at me....will I be able to love these two people? Something inside me said no." And suddenly the chance of having a family disappeared as they got divorced and I ended up on the streets of Sheffield.
Dark Angel doesn't get along with people from his own community. He has made a lot of English friends but feels very estranged from his cultural roots - but more than that he feels he has lost a childhood. But he has made a committment to himself to fight for his dreams. Through his music, he has found his way and
and now good things are happening.
