Dylan Winter pestered Home Truths listeners to tell him why the very idea of our parents having a sex life makes us squirm. This is what they had to say...
Dylan: Do you remember when you were 16 and thought of your parents … um… doing it?
"Yes - disgusting! Well you know it's going on, but you don't actually like to think about it being your Mum and Dad."
"When I was about 12, my parents used to play cards every Friday night with friends and I knew that was the night they would have sex…it was very embarrassing. I used to hide my head under a pillow. Hated it."
"It wasn't that I thought they shouldn't be doing it. I just thought I shouldn't be hearing it. I used to push the pillow round my ears so I couldn't hear it."
Dylan: What about when there's irrefutable evidence that it is going on?
"When my son was 17, we told him I was pregnant and he absolutely horrified. He really thought all that was finished with … Although sex is talked about more, they still don't think their parents are up to it, do they?"
Dylan: Does the thought of them doing it - is that disgusting?
"I suppose it is, because my dad's got a beard… They obviously did it - I just think my mum did it every so often to keep my dad happy.. "
"I thought when I was growing up and realised what was going on, Na! They don't do that! Grown ups don't do that sort of thing!"
Dylan:Do you ever remember as a teenager your parents having sex?
"No, I don't think they ever did. They had me and that was it."
Dylan: Have you ever been caught at it?
"We've had close miss with one of children catching us at it - she was about 17 - I think she knew what was going on because she had a smile on her face - but not as much as I did…"
Dylan: Do you have any advice for people who have kids who are about to become teenagers?
"Move. Move to a large house with a separate wing…"
