Music in the Family
Phil's wife has always had an ambivalent relationship to music; "I thought it was odd when we first met - she didn't have a record collection. But I didn't realise that this was a scientifically proven sign of being tone deaf. She doesn't hate music, she's just not interested. She does like the occasional nice and wholesome song such as Supergrass with vocals like 'Keep your teeth nice and clean'".
Phil's wife has encouraged their children to play a musical instrument ... the 9 year old persevered for several weeks with guitar lessons which entailed "strumming the same note repetitively". Now she's started bringing home classical CDs from the library in the hope of soothing savage breasts during breakfast. She hopes Mozart and cocoa pops will challenge the dominance of the the Simpsons in the Hogan household. The one thing that does drive her up the wall is Phil's guitar playing. It's not so much what he plays, as when he plays it: just before they leave the house and Phil is supposed to be putting shoes on the kids, or when she's just got the baby to sleep and Phil feels the need to demonstrate the opening chord to the Beatles, "It's been a hard days night". Yup, that chord. Funny how it always wakes the baby.
