Platformed Policeman
Many young people today might assume that a seasoned police officer's outlook on their more outrageous fashion statements might tend towards the negative. This is decidedly not so when it comes to seargeant John Sanderson. In his day, he turned heads while strutting his stuff with the latest in inflatable footwear...
"They matched my outfit. The platform of the shoes was actually a red and green band that went all the way around the outside." But John鈥檚 platform shoes had another advantage in addition to their obvious cosmetic appeal.
On a night out on the town as a teenager in Sheffield, John and his mates were stranded and tried to hail a taxi. "The driver declined to take these four inebriated youths back to Barnsley. Not wishing to take the fare, the driver drove off at some haste and the rear wheel of the taxi ran over my right foot. You would think the platform shoe would have made me fall over and break an ankle, together with having a squashed foot."
"I did scream out in pain, but then I realised there wasn鈥檛 any pain. Looking down at my right foot, the platform sole which had been about and 1-录" was now about 录". Within two days it had re-inflated. They certainly saved me quite a serious injury."
"To the young people these days I must look as old as the hills and they see an older person looking critically at their modern fashion. But no, I鈥檓 not being critical at all. I鈥檓 just casting my mind back."
