Harmless Fairytales?
Adrian Mourby is troubled - by Santa...
"I've got a quandary. Why can't we just give things? Why do Easter Eggs have to come from the Easter Bunny? Why do we have to lie? I for one have had enough of it I'm going to talk to my son about how presents get from A to B and it isn't via the North Pole.
It's all very well having a crisis of conscience, but I've already booked John and me on a trip up to Lapland to meet the real Santa. That's what I call really bad timing.
Of course having met the 'real' Finnish Father Christmas, John is even more convinced than ever...
"The trip was quite magical but, what bothered me was that, when we got there, I wanted him to believe. It was partly embarrassment, the social fear that he was going to accuse this large harmless Finnish Gentleman of being a fraud. But it wasn't just middle class embarrassment, I was actually wanting him to believe. And I think this is part of the clue as to why we do it. Even though part of us is saying, 'I can't deceive my child in this way', another part of us is saying, 'Oh, but it's so sweet.'
