Management guru, C.K. Prahalad

Poverty Profits

This week In Business hears from an acclaimed management guru with an urgent message for the world's largest corporations : don't ignore the poor world -- as it's a vital market for the goods and services you produce.

Peter Day speaks with C.K Prahalad, a professor at the top-ranking American business school at Ann Arbor in Michigan. For 12 years he has been one of the very best-known management experts in the world, constantly pushing at conventional ideas about companies and their strategies. Born and educated in Calcutta, C.K Prahalad is best-known for his collaboration with Professor Gary Hamel on the idea of "corporate core competence?".

In a recent article in the Harvard Business Review, Professor Prahalad co-authored an article called : 鈥淪erving the World鈥檚 Poor, Profitably鈥. The idea is summed up like this : 鈥淚mproving the lives of people at the bottom of the economic pyramid is a noble endeavour. It can also be a lucrative one.鈥 Professor Prahalad explains why giant multinationals should be interested in people who, on the face of it,have little or money to spend on manufactured goods.
