Computer and telephone

In this week's programme...

Junk shopped

This week Peter Day looks at the progress of telephones and the Internet.

Wonderful thing, the telephone; brings people together, all across the world; transforms business, keeps everyone in touch. Wonderful...until it starts ringing all the time, with calls from salespeople you’ve never heard of.

Wonderful thing, the Internet; it’s turned the home computer into a global communications device : transforms business, sends words pictures and movies all round the world. Until the junk start pouring in, jamming up that wonderful invention called email with offers you’ve never heard of. Three years ago, junk email--so-called spam—-was just a joke.

But now it’s a serious threat to the system. As for unasked for telephone selling, it’s become such an American headache that fifty million numbers have now been placed on the Federal Do Not Call list. This programme is about all that junk that turns wonderful technologies into a curse……

That and much more on this week's In Business.
