Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister听tells the life stories of people who have died recently. This week: Louise Bennett-Coverley, Catherine Leroy, Ronnie Taylor, Lieutenant Colonel George Styles and听Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.
Louise Bennett-Coverley
Jamaican artist who has died aged 86.

Louise Bennett-Coverley was a poet, performer and broadcaster who wrote in the everyday Jamaican dialect.听 She began writing poems in patois when its use was still frowned upon.听Louise was the first black female student at RADA and was quickly employed by the 大象传媒.

From 1966 to 1982 she wrote and recorded 鈥淢iss Lou鈥檚 Views鈥 鈥 topical radio monologues broadcast several times a week.听Throughout the seventies she hosted Ring Ding 鈥 a television show in which children performed songs and stories from Jamaican folk culture. She lectured at the University College of the West Indies and was dubbed 鈥淭he First Lady of Jamaican comedy鈥. She became a Jamaican icon for her use of language and preservation of her country鈥檚 cultural roots.

Louise Bennett-Coverley听was born on September听7th听1919. She died on听July 26th听2006.


Catherine Leroy
Photojournalist who has died aged 60.

Catherine Leroy was a French-born photojournalist and war photographer.听At only four feet eleven inches tall with a slight frame and plaited bond hair she stood out on the battlefield. She parachuted into action with the airborne division and her work adorned the pages of Life magazine and other publications.

Catherine Leroy's most famous photograph is known as the Corpsman In Anguish - a sequence of three images of the same soldier taken at the battle听for Hill 881 on April 30th 1967. On the thirtieth anniversary of the battle French journalist Regis Le Sommier and Catherine tracked down the soldier in the photo, Vernon Wike.

Regis Le Sommier and fellow war photographer, Tim Page, reflect on Catherine Leroy's life and work.

Catherine Leroy was born in Paris 1944. She died on July 8th 2006.
Ronnie Taylor
Boxing Booth owner who has died aged 95.

Ronnie Taylor ran the last fairground boxing booth. From a family of show people he spent his life as a showman, enticing people into the ring to challenge his boxers with a legendary spiel. His toured his ring until his retirement at the age of 92.

Matthew Bannister talks to Dr Vanessa Toulmin, director of the National Fairground Archive who wrote 鈥淎 Fair Fight鈥 on the history of booth boxing and to Arthur Stevens, a former side show barker, and past president of the Showman鈥檚 Guild who was a friend of Ronnie Taylor.听

Ronnie Taylor was born on December 31st听1910. He died July 20th听2006.
Lieutenant-Colonel George Styles GC
Bomb disposal expert who has died aged 78.

Lieutenant-Colonel George Styles was one of the army's top bomb disposal experts. He led teams that defused more than one thousand devices in Northern Ireland during the IRA campaign of the 1970s.

He was awarded the George Cross for his bravery in defusing two highly dangerous bombs at the Europa Hotel in Belfast within the space of two days.

Joining Matthew Bannister is journalist Chris Ryder who wrote 'A special Kind of Courage' -about the Northern Ireland bomb disposal squadron.

George Styles was born on March 16th 1928. He died on August 1st 2006.

Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf
Soprano who has died aged 90.

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was one of the most influential singers of the 20th Century. For more than thirty years her husband EMI recording manager Walter Legge guided her career. He paid meticulous attention to the choice of roles and opera houses where she would perform. Her works include interpretations of Mozart, Hugo Wolff and Richard Strauss.

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was born December 9th 1915. She died August 3rd 2006.
