Jack Valenti
Lobbyist for Hollywood and aid to LBJ who has died aged 85.
For four decades Jack Valenti was one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. He didn鈥檛 direct or produce blockbusters but, as head of the Motion Picture Association of America, which represents studios, distributors and cinemas, Valenti was Hollywood鈥檚 ambassador in Washington. He knew how to argue the Tinseltown cause in tough political terms, having served as adviser to President Lyndon Johnson.
He was there in Dallas on the 22nd of November 1963, riding in the Kennedy motorcade. Just hours after one president was shot dead, Valenti was at the side of his successor as Lyndon Johnson was sworn in.
Jack Valenti remained at Johnson鈥檚 side at the White House until 1966 when he assumed presidential powers of his own. He became the head of the Motion Picture Association of America, campaigning to overthrow censorship laws and replacing them with the certificate system that exists to this day.

Margaret Sutherland
Last of the 鈥淟ossiemouth lassies鈥. Maid to Ramsay MacDonald who has died听aged 98.
As Labour鈥檚 latest prime minister prepares to move out of Downing Street the death of 98 year old Margaret Sutherland has shed light on life with the very first Labour resident of Number 10.
Margaret Sutherland was a 17 year old housemaid from the small Scottish fishing village of Lossiemouth when, in 1927, local boy-made-good Ramsay MacDonald called on her for help. MacDonald, a widower, was juggling his job as leader of the Labour party with the task of bringing up five children in his north London home. When he led Labour back to Downing Street in 1929 for his second term in office, Maggie Main 鈥 as she was then 鈥 went to London to work for him.

Professor Dorrit Hoffleit
Astronomer who has died aged 100.
Look up on a clear night and the sky twinkles with more than 11,000 stars. Thanks to the work of Dorrit Hoffleit, who mapped the position of every one of those tiny suns in her book The Bright Star Catalogue, successive generations of astronomers have been able to trace the movement of the heavens.
Dorrit Hoffleit was a pioneering astronomer who both pushed back scientific boundaries and challenged the ones restricting the role of women here on earth.
John Wilson talks to听two American astronomers who worked closely with Dorrit Hoffleit - Professor Bill Van Altena, a colleague at Yale, and Dr David DeVorkin, a former student.

Mike Reynolds
Entrepreneur and conservationist who has died aged 76.
Mike Reynolds gave up life in London ad-land, where he created one of the best known British television commercials of all time, "The Milky Bar听听Kid" 听, to dedicate himself to birds in the wilds of Cornwall. He set up the popular Paradise Park wildlife sanctuary in Hayle, Cornwall in 1973, having moved from London with his wife, kids and seventy birds 鈥 mostly parrots.
Mike Reynolds was a conservationist who campaigned against the illegal trade in exotic birds and who is credited with reintroducing the Chough to Cornwall.
