Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister tells the life stories of people who have died recently:
Jorn Utzon, Odetta, Vladimir Rubinstein, Creighton Carvello and Rob Partridge.
Jorn Utzon
Architect who has died aged 90

Jorn Utzon designed one of the world鈥檚 best known buildings - the Sydney Opera House 鈥 but never saw it completed. The Danish architect fell out with his Australian political masters and resigned from the project in 1966, several years before the building officially opened. It wasn鈥檛 until more than thirty years later that Utzon agreed to oversee work on the interior of his masterpiece. But even then he didn鈥檛 return to Australia.

Jorn Utzon was born in Copenhagen and graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts there. He designed the acclaimed Assembly building in Kuwait, and a number of admired projects in his native Denmark and in Mallorca.

Matthew Bannister talks to Professor Richard Weston and the Australian architect Richard Leplastrier

Jorn Utzon was born April 9 1918 and died November 29 2008.
Odetta
Singer who has died aged 77

Odetta was born in Birmingham, Alabama in the depths of the depression of the 1930s. The prison and work songs recorded in the fields of the Deep South made a powerful impression on her. First nominated for a Grammy award for her 1963 album, 鈥淥detta Sings Folk Songs鈥, she was nominated again in 1999 and 2005.

Odetta influenced Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and Joan Armatrading. In 1963 she sang on the steps of the Lincoln memorial at Martin Luther King鈥檚 civil rights march on Washington and she had hoped to sing at the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.

Matthew Bannister talks to singers Pete Seeger and Madeleine Peyroux.

Odetta Holmes was born December 31 1930 and died December 2 2008.

Vladimir Rubinstein MBE
Linguist who worked with the 大象传媒 Monitoring Service and has died aged 91

Vladimir Rubinstein played an important part in the 大象传媒鈥檚 monitoring of foreign radio broadcasts both during World War Two and the Cold War. Known as Vova, Rubinstein was born to a Russian father and Estonian mother and spent the first part of his life in Tallinn.

In 1936, Vladimir Rubinstein came to England to study law, first at the London School of Economics and then at Cambridge. As war broke out, he was recruited to join the newly established 大象传媒 Monitoring service, then based in camouflaged huts in the grounds of a stately home near Evesham. Here, he was employed to carry out round the clock monitoring of foreign radio stations, which could provide vital clues about the political and military status of Britain鈥檚 enemies.

Matthew Bannister talks to Andrew Wiseman, Lorna Swire and Gregory and Catherine Rubinstein.

Vladimir Rubinstein was born November 19 1916 and died October 19 2008.
Creighton Carvello
Memory man who has died aged 64

Creighton Carvello was a famous memory man. He could remember sequences of thousands of numbers, the order of packs of playing cards, and was an almanac of sporting trivia. Creighton was born in India in 1944, but his family moved to Middlesbrough when he was five. He made the record books on many occasions, including in 2003 when he recalled 3,500 facts about every FA cup final since 1872, including the names of the referees and goal scorers, the teams, attendances and venues.

Matthew Bannister talks to eight times World Memory champion Dominic O鈥橞rien, who was inspired by Creighton Carvello.

Creighton Carvello was born November 14 1944 and died November 18 2008.
Rob Partridge
Music publicist who has died aged 60

Rob Partridge was an influential record company PR man who helped to create the careers of Bob Marley, U2, Tom Waits, Courtney Pine and Marianne Faithfull, among many others. He started his working life as a journalist, becoming news editor at the Melody Maker. In the mid seventies, Chris Blackwell recruited him as head of press at Island Records. After twenty years at the label, Partridge left to set up his own PR consultancy in partnership with his deputy Neil Storey.

Neil Storey and U2 manager Paul McGuiness pay tribute.

Rob Partridge was born June 2 1948 and died November 26 2008.
