Sir Michael Quinlan Civil Servant who has died aged 78
Sir Michael Quinlan was a senior civil servant with an international reputation in the field of nuclear deterrence. At the Ministry of Defence, he briefed successive Prime Ministers on nuclear arms policy and, after retiring, wrote influential books on the ethics of warfare.
Michael Quinlan was educated at听Wimbledon College and Oxford University where he took a double first in Classics. After National Service in the RAF, he joined the Air Ministry.

Christopher Raeburn Classical Music Producer who has died aged 80
Christopher Raeburn was a legendary record producer who developed close relationships with many of the great stars of classical music. Working at the Decca label during its golden age, he presided over many critically acclaimed recordings, particularly of opera. He cajoled artists like Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland, Georg Solti and Vladimir Ashkenazy to give of their best in the studio using a technique that he called 鈥渕usical midwifery鈥. In later life he was a mentor to the mezzo soprano Cecilia Bartoli, supporting and promoting her career. Having won a scholarship to study Mozart operas, Christopher Raeburn travelled to Vienna in 1954 and heard all the great artists of the day. In 1958 he began work at the Decca Record Company , where he rose to become Director of Artists and Repertoire before his formal retirement in 1991. However, he continued working for the company as a freelance producer until shortly before his death.

Dr William T. Close American surgeon who has died aged 84
Dr William T. Close was an American surgeon who played a key role in shaping the health system in Zaire, now known as Congo, during the 1960s and early 70s. The former Army pilot trained as a doctor in New York, before moving to Central Africa. As personal physician to President Mobuto, he was able to influence health policy across the country and played a significant part in tackling the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Zaire in 1976.

Geoffrey Smith Gardener and broadcaster who has died aged 80
For twenty years Geoffrey Smith was a much loved panellist on Radio 4鈥檚 Gardeners鈥 Question Time. He also made a string of TV series including 鈥淢r Smith鈥檚 Vegetable Garden鈥, 听鈥淢r Smith鈥檚 Flower Garden,鈥 and 鈥淕eoffrey Smith鈥檚 World of Flowers鈥.
Born on the North Yorkshire border, Geoffrey was strongly associated with the county, where he created the garden for which he will be best remembered, Harlow Carr.

Chris Finnegan
British Boxing Champion who has died aged 64
Chris Finnegan was a former bricklayer who won a boxing gold medal for Britain at the Mexico Olympics and went on to become British, European and Commonwealth Light Heavyweight champion. Chris was born into a boxing family at Iver in Buckinghamshire. His brother Kevin became British and European Middleweight champion and the pair used to conduct legendary sparring sessions at the Lavender Hill gym in South London. Chris was a surprise choice for the 1968 British Olympic squad and faced a tough Russian opponent in the final. Finnegan鈥檚 success was a landmark for British boxing.
