Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister听tells the life stories of people who have recently died. This week:Lord Ackner, Professor Anderson, Professor Sherratt and The Very Reverend Basil Moss.
Lord Desmond Ackner
who has died aged 85

As benchers of Middle Temple Baroness Patricia Scotland and Sir Louis Blom-Cooper听worked with Desmond Ackner. They discuss a career which has included his role representing victims of the Aberfan coal disaster, arguing against press coverage of the Spycatcher Case and campaigning against changes in the power of judges.

Desmond Ackner, Baron Ackner of Sutton was born September 18th 1920 and died March 21st 2006.

Professor Ephraim Saul "Andy" Anderson
Microbiologist who has died aged 94

E. S. Anderson was one of the first scientists to warn that giving antibiotics to livestock could backfire with dangerous consequences to humans. He worked in Colindale at The Central Public Health Laboratory from the听mid 1950s to late 1970s.

Two former colleagues at Colindale discuss working with him.听Jenny Frost, who is currently Deputy Chief Scientific Advisor to the National Assembly of Wales and听Dr John Threlfall, the current director of the Public Health Laboratory.

E. S. Anderson was born on the 28th October 1911. He died on the 14th March 2006.
Andrew Sherratt
Archaeologist who has died aged 59

Professor Andrew Sherratt听is described as one of the most original, creative and thought-provoking researchers in pre-historic archaeology.His books include 'Plough and Pastoralism: aspects of the secondary products revolution' and the online ArchAtlas project.

Matthew discusses his contribution to archaeology with two colleagues from Sheffield University Dr Paul Halstead and Professor John Bennett.

Andrew Sherratt was born on the 8th May 1946. He died on the 24th February 2006.
The Very Reverend Basil Moss
Former Provost of Birmingham Cathedral who has died aged 87.

In 1981, the Very Reverend Basil Moss co-wrote with his wife Rachel, the report 'God's Yes to Sexuality'.听This was so controversial that he was never appointed a Bishop. Instead he was an influential Provost of Birmingham - caring deeply for social justice and the city's growing ethnic minority population. He also worked tirelessly to help the victims of the Birmingham pub bombings of 1974.

Mark Santer, former Bishop of Birmingham and life long friend, Dr Mary Tanner, discuss Basil Moss's career.

Basil Moss was born on October 7th 1918 and died March 24th 2006.
