Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister tells the life stories of people who have died recently. This week:John Drummond, Nellie Connally, Charlie Williams, Sir Kyffin Williams and Steve Irwin.
Sir John Drummond

Sir John Drummond was Assistant Head of Music and Arts at 大象传媒 Television, the Director of the Edinburgh Festival, Controller of Music and Radio 3, and Director of the 大象传媒 Proms. He was Chairman of the National Dance Co-ordinating Committee and a Governor of the Royal Ballet. A passionate defender of the Arts he was a advocate for contemporary music and championed young artists.

Matthew Bannister talks to Stephen Maddock Chief Executive of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, his planning assistant at The Proms, conductor Sir Andrew Davis and director of the Royal Ballet Monica Mason.

Sir John Drummond was born November 25th听1934. He died听September 6th 2006.听

Nellie Connally

On November 22nd 1963, Nellie Connally was sitting in President John F Kennedy鈥檚 limousine in a motorcade through cheering crowds in the city of Dallas. She was escorting the President along with her husband John - the Governor of Texas. Mrs. Connally was the last survivor of the drive which changed the course of American history.

Nellie Connally was born听on February 24th 1919. She died September 2nd听2006.
Charlie Williams
Comedian who has died aged 78

Charlie Williams was the son of a Barbados-born coal miner. He grew up in Royston near Barnsley and worked at the Upton Colliery where he played in the works football team. Doncaster Rovers spotted him and he began an 11-year career at Belle Vue, playing as a centre half. He made 171 appearances for the club.

He retired from football in 1959 and tried to make a living as a club singer but found more success telling jokes. He became known for his blunt Yorkshire accent and catchphrase "me old flower". His television shows include 'The Comedians', 'It's Charlie Williams' and 'The Golden Shot'. In 1999 he was awarded an MBE.

Comedian Frank Carson, actor Joseph Marcell and 'The Comedians' producer Johnnie Hamp pay tribute to Charlie Williams.

Charlie Williams was born on December 23rd 1928. He died September 2nd 2006.
Sir Kyffin Williams

Leading Welsh artist John Kyffin Williams was renowned for his paintings of the North Wales landscape and the people who lived there. From 1944 to 1973 he was senior art master at Highgate School, returning to Wales to paint whenever he could. In 1974 he was made a Royal Academician and his fellow academician Anthony Green has paid tribute to his influence on his own work as an artist and as a teacher.

He was a vivid and vocal supporter of the arts in Wales. His dark depiction of the mountains of Snowdonia captured the imagination of the public there and his work became increasingly sort after.

His close friend, the writer Emyr Humphreys pays tribute to him.

Sir Kyffin Williams was born May 9th听1918. He听died听September 1st 2006.

Steve Irwin
Australian naturalist and television personality has died aged 44.

Steve Irwin was born near Melbourne. His parents were both naturalists and he received a 3.6 meter python for his 6th birthday. In 1970 the family bought a small reptile park in Queensland which grew in size and became Australia Zoo. Steve learnt from his father how to relocate rogue crocodiles and his television breakthrough came following an advertisement shot at the zoo. He took over the running of Australia Zoo in 1991 when his parents retired. It is also where he met his wife Terri Raines.

Steve Irwin began shooting his first film 'The Crocodile Hunter' on his honeymoon in 1992 and 'The Crocodile Hunter's Croc Files' (1999), 'the Crocodile Hunter Diaries' (2002) and a slot on the Discovery Channel followed. He became known for his close encounters with some of the worlds deadliest creatures whilst wearing oversize khaki shorts, ankle-length boots and shouting "Crickey, he's angry". He was killed by a stingray on Monday whilst filming on the Great Barrier Reef .

Barry Humphries as Dame Edna visited Steve Irwin at Australia Zoo and recalls his experience.

Steve Irwin was born on February 22nd 1962. He died on September 4th 2006.
