Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister tells the life stories of people who have died recently: Reverend Leslie Hardman, Mauricio Kagel, Ian Hibell and Marie Roberts.
The Reverend Leslie Hardman, MBE
Jewish army chaplain and Rabbi who has died aged 95

The Reverend Leslie Hardman was the Jewish army chaplain who went in with the troops who liberated the Nazi concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. The horrific sights he saw there would have a profound effect on the rest of his life.

Leslie Hardman was born in South Wales and attended the Hope Street Jewish School in Liverpool. He studied at a religious seminary and then Leeds University, becoming a Jewish minister in the city after graduation. In later life he spent nearly forty years as Rabbi of the Hendon United Synagogue in North London. But his wartime experiences overshadowed everything else. He had joined the army as a chaplain and, in April 1945, was travelling with the British troops fighting their way into Germany. Some German soldiers appeared and told the British that there was a concentration camp where typhus had broken out and tens of thousands of people were dying.

Matthew Bannister talks to听Gena Turgel who was one of the survivors of the camp, to Edna Martin, a member of the congregation at Hendon and to the historian Ben Shephard, author of 鈥淎fter Daybreak 鈥 The Liberation of Bergen-Belsen鈥.

Leslie Hardman was born February 18th 1913. He died October 7th 2008.
Mauricio Kagel
Argentinian Composer who has died aged 76

The composer Mauricio Kagel blurred the distinctions between music, theatre, film and radio. His works often called for musicians who could act as well as play their instruments. Staatstheater听 is described as 鈥渁 ballet without dancers鈥 but in fact has more in common with opera, Variete is a piece for听circus artists who have to perform their acts precisely in time with Kagel鈥檚 music and Sur Scene听 is a lecture on contemporary music interrupted by a mimic, a singer and three instrumentalists.

Mauricio Kagel was born in Argentina but moved to Europe in the 1950s. His own education was broad, including lessons in piano, cello, organ, conducting and the theory of music and 鈥 at university in Buenos Aires 鈥 lectures in philosophy and literature.

Matthew Bannister talks to the music writer Paul Griffiths and to the composer David Sawer听who studied music theatre under Kagel.

Mauricio Kagel was听born听December 24th 1931. He died September 18th听2008.

Ian Hibell
Cyclist who has died aged 74

In the last forty years Ian Hibell covered an estimated two hundred and fifty thousand miles on his faithful bike.

In the 1970s, he cycled the eighteen thousand miles from the tip of Cape Horn to the far north of America, hacking his way though jungles and wading through swamps. Ian crossed the Sahara desert on a trip south through Europe and Africa and even in his later years he kept on cycling.

For the brief periods when he was at home, Ian lived at Brixham in Devon. He used to have a job at Standard Telephones and Cables. But he was often late back from his annual holiday and eventually they gave him a sabbatical to pursue his cycling. Even as a small boy Ian had a sense of adventure. The story is told that he escaped from the family garden in his pedal car and had to be brought back from the other side of town by the police.听

Our reporter Tom Butt went to a memorial service for Ian in his home town and Matthew Bannister听talks to听Ian Hibell's听friend Nic Henderson.

Ian Hibell was born January 6th 1934. He died August 23rd 2008.
Marie Roberts
Dancer and circus artiste who has died aged 94

Marie Roberts was born into showbusiness and married into the circus. She was part of the family group that founded the highly successful Roberts Brothers Circus.

Marie Beck was born in Brixton in South London in 1914. Her father was a famous pantomime goose. She learned to sing and dance in the 1920s with a group called Terry鈥檚 Juveniles, appearing at the London Palladium when she was twelve. Four years later, Marie joined another famous dance group 鈥 the Jackson girls, travelling to France to appear at the Casino de Paris in a revue which starred Josephine Baker. When she returned to Britain, Marie became part of the Danny Lipton trio and met her lifelong friend Betty Clarkson.
It was whilst she was appearing in variety shows that Marie met her future husband. Tommy Roberts came from a circus family and was performing as an acrobat in a horizontal bar act with his brother Bobby. During the war the two men joined the fire service and moved with their wives to Edinburgh. In 1944 the four started their first travelling circus. It went on to become a huge success.

Matthew听Bannister talks to听Marie鈥檚 son John听Roberts and to her friend Betty Clarkson.

Marie Roberts was born June 10th 1914. She died September 20th 2008.
