Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister tells the life stories of people who have died recently. This week: Carlo Ponti, Richard Boston, Pierre Delanoe, David Ervine and Magnus Magnusson.
Carlo Ponti
Film producer who has died aged 94.

Carlo Ponti鈥檚 many production credits include the multi Oscar winning Dr Zhivago, directed by David Lean and films by Fellini, Rosselini and Antonioni. However, it is his relationship with Sophia Loren which catapulted him from the backrooms of the industry into the gossip columns. Ponti worked hard to build up Loren鈥檚 career, executive producing most of her pictures in the fifties and sixties.

Matthew Bannister talks to the Academy Award winning cinematographer Jack Cardiff who worked for Ponti as a young cameraman on the 1957 movie Legend of the Lost and Sandy Lieberson, who is now the chair of Film London, and met Ponti when he was an agent representing a number of top stars.

Carlo Ponti was born December 11th 1912. He died January 10th 2007.
Richard Boston
Writer and journalist who has died aged 67.

Richard Boston described his recreations as 鈥渟oothsaying, shelling peas and embroidery鈥. He was also the real ale correspondent for the Guardian newspaper and once stood for election to the European Parliament under the slogan 鈥淚t鈥檚 a big trough and I want to get my nose in it鈥.

Boston wrote a well received biography of the cartoonist Osbert Lancaster and edited a literary magazine called Quarto.

Matthew Bannister talks to Terry Jones of Monty Python who funded a couple of Richard Boston鈥檚 ventures: a micro brewery and an environmental magazine called 鈥淰ole鈥.

Richard Boston was born December 29th 1938. He died on December 22nd 2006.
Pierre Delano毛

Pierre Delano毛 wrote more than four thousand lyrics for the top French stars of the 1950s and 60s 鈥 Edith Piaf, Maurice Chevalier and Jonny Halliday. He also translated into French the songs of Bob Dylan, who approved of his versions.

His own songs we became international hits in English, 鈥楨t Maintenant鈥 becoming 鈥榃hat Now My Love?鈥 recorded by Shirley Bassey and 鈥楯e T鈥橝ppartiens鈥 appearing as 鈥楲et It Be Me鈥 - an international hit, for Tom Jones, the Everly Brothers, Nina Simone and Sonny and Cher.

Philip Sweeney, an expert on French popular music, reflects on Delano毛鈥檚 life and work.

Pierre Charles Marcel Napol茅on Leroyer was born December 16th 1918. He died December 27th 2006.

David Ervine

David Ervine joined the paramilitary Ulster Volunteer Force in the 1970s after watching IRA bombs exploding all over Belfast on Bloody Friday. Ervine said he wanted to 鈥渞eturn the IRA鈥檚 serve鈥. Whilst trying to do that he was caught red handed carrying a bomb in the stolen car he was driving. After being forced to defuse the bomb at gunpoint he was arrested and sentenced to eleven years in prison. But Ervine was a reluctant terrorist and on his release left violence behind him, took up legitimate politics and campaigned for peace as leader of the Progressive Unionist party.

The 大象传媒鈥檚 Ireland correspondent, Kevin Connolly, reported from his funeral.
