Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister tells the life stories of people who have died recently. This week: Drexel Sprecher, Belle Zeck, Mary Cook, Professor Sir Nicholas Shackleton and Lillian Asplund.
DREXEL SPRECHER and BELLE ZECK
Two American prosecutors at Nuremberg

A team of over 175 American lawyers were involved in the Nuremberg trials - only a handful now remain to describe their experiences and what motivated them.听听 Drexel Sprecher was a labour lawyer whose ability to speak German proved useful at Nuremberg.听 Back in the States he continued to work as a lawyer and to maintain an interest in politics - working for the Democratic National Committee.听 He was responsible for editing the 15 volume report of the trials and later wrote his own 2 volume book.听听

Belle Mayer Zeck worked for the US Treasury Dept before becoming one of the few women to work as part of the prosecuting team at Nuremberg.听 It was there that she met her husband.听 After the war she was an active campaigner for the Democratic party and combined a career with family life.

To find out what it was like to be a prosecutor at Nuremberg, Matthew Bannister, interviewed Benjamin Ferencz - who has continued to campaign for the importance of international criminal courts.

Belle Mayer Zeck died aged 87.
Drexel Sprecher died aged 92.

MARY COOK
Head of Entertainments at the Nuffield Centre who has died aged 93.

At the start of her career she played the piano in a small ballet school which was attended by Beryl Grey -听who went on to become a Prima Ballerina and Gillian Lynne -听who went on to become a choreographer.听

Dame Beryl describes Mary at the piano with her painted scarlet finger nails and how she showed rather a lot of leg in the black satin shorts she wore to teach tap.

Following a spell in Portugal during the war, she returned to London and assisted Irving Berlin in setting up his show "This is the Army".听 She went on to work for the both the Nuffield Centre and the 大象传媒, taking responsibility for auditioning ex-servicemen seeking a career in entertainment.听 Amongst those she talent-spotted were Benny Hill, Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe, Tommy Cooper, Tony Hancock, Michael Bentine, Frankie Howerd and Ronnie Corbett.

Mark Lewisohn has researched the history of the Nuffield Centre and discusses her time there.

PROFESSOR SIR NICHOLAS SHACKLETON
A geologist who studied cycles of climate change has died aged 68.

The work undertaken by Sir Nicholas Shackleton at the Godwin Institute in Cambridge fundamentally changed our understanding of the role of carbon dioxide in warming and cooling the Earth's climate. He was also world renowned in a completely different field - as a historian and collector of old clarinets.

Last Word attended his memorial service this week.听 You will hear from fellow scientists Mike Hall, Professor Harry Elderfield, Professor Ekhard Salje and Dr David Jones and from his musical friend Amelia Oldfield and Phyllis Champion.

LILLIAN ASPLUND
The last American survivor of the Titanic.

Lillian Asplund is the听last survivor of the Titanic disaster able to recall the night's events. She was 5 years old.听听Among the 1,523 who perished were her three brothers and her father. The sight of their faces peering down over the ship's rail as her lifeboat descended is said to have haunted her for the rest of her life.

Dianne Williamson a reporter from Lillian's local newspaper the Worcester Telegram & Gazette tells us in her own words how hard she tried to get Lillian to talk publicly about the traumatic event.

Lillian Asplund has died aged 99.
