Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister tells the life stories of people who have died recently. This week: Dan Keating, Helen Flemming, Murray Martin, Ronnie Fisher and Lady Katherine Brandram.
Dan Keating
Irish Republican who has died aged 105.

Dan Keating was one of the last surviving Irish Republicans who fought the Black and Tans for independence from Britain in the 1920s. He went on to be involved in听paramilitary activity with the IRA听in London during the Second World War.

He was patron of Republican Sinn Fein which repudiates the Good Friday agreement. He believed that there could only be peace when Ireland was truly united and the British had been driven from its shores.

Matthew Bannister talks to 大象传媒 reporter Diarmaid Fleming and听听the President of Republican Sinn Fein, Ruari O鈥橞radaigh.听

Dan Keating was born January 2nd听1902.听He died听听October 2nd 2007.
Helen Freeman
Conservationist who has died aged听75.

Helen Freeman fell in love with Snow Leopards 鈥 the beautiful and charismatic big cats of Central Asia. She dedicated the latter part of her life to saving them from extinction.听Helen was the only child of Greek immigrants to the United States. She studied business administration at Washington State University, but did voluntary work in her spare time at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. She became so fascinated by animals that, once her children were in school, she went back to university to take a second degree in zoology. This led to a full time job at the zoo where she became curator of education. But in 1972 Helen said she 鈥渇ell in love at first sight鈥 with a pair of snow leopards from the Soviet Union 鈥 called Nicholas and Alexandria. She spent hours watching them, becoming an expert in their behaviour and designing a programme to help them to breed. In 1981 she decided to take her passion further:听

Matthew Bannister talks to Helen Freeman's听colleague at the Snow Leopard Trust, Tom McCarthy and to Peter Jackson of the World Conservation Union

Helen Freeman was born听March 10th 1932. She died 20th September 2007
Murray Martin
Filmmaker, photography worker and collectivist who has died aged 64.

Murray Martin was a filmmaker who specialised in chronicling working class lives. He was also an artistic catalyst 鈥 setting up the Amber film and photography collective at Regent Street Polytechnic in London in 1968 and moving it to Newcastle the following year. Although he wouldn鈥檛 have claimed sole credit for any of the work, without him 40 films and 100 photographic narratives of working class and marginalised lives would not have happened.

Murray Martin was a charismatic figure. Born in Stoke on Trent into a family of potters and miners, he studied fine art in Newcastle and filmmaking in London.

Matthew Bannister talks to Murray Martin's听fellow founder member of Amber, the photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen.

Martin Murray was born January 27th 1943.听He听died August 14th 2007.
Ronnie Fisher
Founder of hospice care in the National Health Service who has died aged 90.

Ronnie Fisher听 was the founder of hospice care in the National Health Service. In the 1950s he was working as a senior anaesthetist in Bournemouth when he became convinced that more could be done to help patients who were dying from cancer. Dr Fisher persuaded the local health authority to pay for the running costs of a hospice, if money to build and equip it could be raised from the public. He worked tirelessly to raise the funds. When the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital opened in February 1975 it was the first NHS-run palliative care service in the country.

Ronnie Fisher went to school in Cumbria and read medicine at Cambridge University. He served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during the war and taught at Montreal University before moving to the Bournemouth and East Dorset group of hospitals in 1953.

Matthew Bannister talls to Dr. Claude Rednard who trained under Ronnie Fisher.听

Ronnie Fisher died August 15th 2007.
Lady Katherine Brandram
Princess Katherine of Greece and the last surviving great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria who has died aged 94.

The last surviving great grand daughter of Queen Victoria has died. The Lady Katherine Brandram was born Princess Katherine of Greece and Denmark. She was the daughter of King Constantine the First of Greece and his wife, Sophie of Prussia. Sophie was the sister of the Kaiser and daughter of Empress Victoria of Germany 鈥 who was the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria. When Princess Katherine was christened, the whole Greek Army and Navy were her godparents. Her childhood was peripatetic as her family went in and out of power in Greece. She lived for a time in Florence, was educated in England and spent the second world war in South Africa. After the war, she was travelling by ship to England when she met Major Richard Brandram. They were married in 1947, lived in Eaton Square in London and then moved to Marlow where the Lady Katherine lived in a small cottage until she died.

Matthew Bannister talks to the writer Hugo Vickers who went to visit Lady Brandram in Marlow.

Lady Katherine Brandram听 was born May 4th 1913. She died听October 2nd 2007.
