Anna Politkovskaya
Russian journalist who has died aged 48.
Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya was renowned for her courage. She was an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin鈥檚 regime, relentlessly returning to Chechnya and reporting on the human rights abuses being carried out in the war there despite repeated death threats. She was shot dead in a life outside her apartment block in Moscow. A pistol and four bullets were lying near the body鈥 signature observers say of a contract killing.
Last Word speaks to historian Lady Antonia Fraser, Norweigan novelist and to Jonathan Heawood, director of PEN, the campaigning writer鈥檚 organisation at a vigil in London on the day of her funeral. Amanda Hopkinson Director of British Centre for Literary Translation remembers her and her writing.

Beth Levine Shoe designer who has died aged 91.
Beth Levine鈥檚 鈥渂oots were made for walking鈥 as Nancy Sinatra sang whilst wearing a pair of her white stiletto boots.
Levine began work as a shoe model and worked her way up from a stylist to head designer for I. Miller before starting her own business with her husband Herbert Levine.
She was known as America's First Lady of Shoe Design because of her prominence in 20th-century fashion, and because her designs were worn by the U.S. first ladies Lady Bird Johnson, Patricia Nixon and Jacqueline Kennedy. She also made shoes for Barbra Streisand and Marilyn Monroe.

Adam Curle Peacemaker who has died aged 90.
In 1973, Adam Curle, was asked to Chair the first peace studies in Britain at Bradford University. He was a mediator and risked his life pursuing peace between warring factions in trouble spots around the world. A pacifist and a Quaker, Professor Curle was awarded the Ghandi peace prize in the year 2000.

Charles Thomas William 'Adam' Curle was born July 4th 1916. He died on September 28th 2006.

Paul Hunter Snooker player who has died aged 27.
Paul Hunter was known as The Beckham of the Baize. In his short career he had a major impact on the sport of snooker. Before his death from cancer aged 27 he had won three masters titles. Last Word looks back at his career.

Professor Charles Rees Organic chemist who has died aged 78.
Professor Charles Rees was an eminent organic chemist with a reputation as one of the most brilliant lecturers in his field. He liked to boast that his research into peptic ulcers saved the NHS millions and put hundreds of surgeons out of work. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974 and was president of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
