John Wilson
John WilsonÌýtells the life stories of people who have died recently: Sir John Hermon, Mitch Mitchell, Tony Hoare and Dr Robert Foote.Ìý
Sir John Hermon
RUC Chief Constable who has died aged 79

Sir John Hermon led the Royal Ulster Constabulary through one of the most tumultuous periods of Northern Ireland’s history. During the nine years he served as Chief Constable, the Province witnessed the deaths of more than 900 people as a result of the Troubles, including 129 of his own officers. Sir John – or Jack as he was widely known – became associated with the shoot-to-kill affair, in which RUC officers were investigated for the killing of republican terror suspects. He later wrote an autobiography charting his four decade career in the RUC which he called “Holding The Line".

John WilsonÌýtalks to ´óÏó´«Ã½â€™s Northern Ireland correspondent Mark Simpson and to Sir Ronnie Flanagan – the Government’s Chief Inspector of the Constabulary and a former RUC Chief himself.Ìý

Sir John Hermon was born November 23rd 1928. He died November 6th 2008.

Mitch Mitchell
Drummer who has died aged 61
Ìý
As a drummer performing alongside Jimi Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell had a choice to make – either play it safe and steady, or raise the game musically. He usually chose the latter.

Mitch Mitchell died this week in Portland, Oregon after performing in a gig celebrating the Hendrix legacy. He joined the band in 1967, when the American guitarist arrived to make a new home in London. Although Hendrix was still unknown at the time, Mitch Mitchell had already tasted pop stardom, as drummer with Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames.

John Wilson talks to Georgie Fame and to singer songwriter Robert Wyatt who, in the late sixties, was drummer with the Soft Machine and went on the road with Mitchell in 1968.

John "Mitch" Mitchell was bornÌýJuly 9thÌý1947. He died November 12thÌý2008.
Tony Hoare
Television screenwriter who has died aged 70

Many crime writers pride themselves on their research and their underworld contacts. When television dramatist Tony Hoare sat down at his typewriter, it was his own memory he’d consult. Tony Hoare was a bankrobber and getaway driver who went on to pen classic episodes of Minder and the Sweeney... Tony Hoare brought a sense of realism to the grittiest cop show on television. And later, with Minder, his first hand knowledge of the life of crime was filtered through a natural sense of humour.

He served several prison sentences and it was during a spell in Hull jail that he began to write, with encouragement from the playwright and prison visitor Alan Plater.

John Wilson talks to Andrew Payne, a fellow scriptwriter on the MinderÌý series and to George Cole who playedÌý²Ñ¾±²Ô»å±ð°ù’s Arthur Daly.

Tony Hoare was born February 4th 1938. He died October 2nd 2008.

Dr Robert Foote
Scientist who has died aged 86

In 1996 Dolly the sheep became the first animal to be cloned from a single cell. But that scientific landmark in an Edinburgh laboratory had its roots in research work pioneered by Dr Robert Foote four decades earlier at Cornell University in New York.

Dr Foote was an expert in DNA and cell production. He developed techniques that allowed successful artificial insemination in livestock. And he proved that all female mammals – including humans – have a full set of egg cells in the ovaries even before birth.

John Wilson talks to Dr Ron Butler, Chairman of the Department of Animal Science at Cornell, who worked closely with Dr Robert Foote.Ìý

Dr Robert Foote died 27th October 2008.
Miriam Makeba
Singer who has died aged 76

South African singer and activist who became a potent symbol of the anti-apartheid struggle.

Following tributes on Radio 4 and elsewhere, Last Word ends this week's programme with her song To Those We Love.

Miriam Makeba was born March 4th 1932. She died November 10th 2008.
