Joerg Haider
Austrian politician who has died aged 58
Joerg Haider divided opinion in his native Austria and provoked outrage abroad. Haider led the far right Freedom Party to second place in the General Election of 1999, ending decades of political dominance by Austria’s two main parties.
Haider’s anti-immigration and anti-EU agenda brought him into government, sharing power in a coalition with the centre right. The EU responded with unprecedented diplomatic sanctions against a member state. It’s said that Haider relished the attention.
Since 2000 Joerg Haider's political fortunes had been mixed. His party split in two although his most recent political venture – the Alliance For The Future of Austria – saw a resurgence in polls just two weeks ago.
Joerg Haider died when the car he was driving came off the road near his home in Carinthia.
John Wilson talks to ´óÏó´«Ã½â€™s Vienna correspondent Bethany Bell and to political consultant and journalist Thomas Hofer about Joerg Haider's life and legacy.Ìý
