He also treated the Shah of Iran, the King of Jordan and the former Russian President Boris Yeltsin. Dr. DeBakey carried out more than sixty thousand operations 鈥 the last of them at the age of ninety.
Michael DeBakey was born in Louisiana, the son of a Lebanese immigrant who worked as a pharmacist. Valentine Vester
Proprietor of the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem who has died aged 96
It could be said that Valentine Vester married into the Middle East. She was born and brought up in Yorkshire, but her husband Horatio was the descendant of a wealthy family from Chicago who had moved to Jerusalem in the nineteenth century to do good works among the poor. The family bought a former Arab palace and turned it into a hostel for pilgrims. By the time Horatio and Valentine moved there in 1963, it had become the American Colony Hotel. The couple took it over and turned it into a commercial success.
Many famous guests stayed at the hotel, including the actor and raconteur Peter Ustinov.
The hotel became known as a haven for diplomats and foreign correspondents covering the region鈥檚 turbulent history. It was often the backdrop for crucial political events. In room 16, Israeli and Palestinan negotiators secretly drafted parts of the Oslo peace accord.
Matthew Bannister talks to regular guests at the hotel -听大象传媒 correspondents Lyse Doucet and Paul Adams and 大象传媒 reporter Marylin Rust went to visit Valentine Vester鈥檚 Jerusalem landmark.
